The Presumption of Innocence - Another Criminal Law Absurdity!
You can do it in China. Or Cuba. Even in Iran. But in Georgia, ahhh, sweet Georgia, I'm say Georgia, Georgia, a song of you comes as sweet and clear as moonlight through the pines, you can't presume a defendant guilty in a criminal trial. The Soviets had it right. Round up the undesirables, take them to the basement in Lubyanka Headquarters and shoot them in the head. They didn't have to worry about trials or any silly old presumption of innocence. I'm all for level playing fields and fundamental fairness but gosh darn it, we can't fall behind the majority of the planet regarding presumption of guilt. In this year of financial constraints, this is one area the Georgia Legislature could fix that wouldn't cost a ruble to fix yet would ensure the conviction of all defendants. Arrrgghhh.
